windows update runs on and on at the checking for updates screen

At the checking for hardware screen my machine just keeps ckecking for updates. I have let it run for 30 min to see what happens. I don't recieve any error codes. I just get upset and cancel it out. It seems that the problem occured after I installed Office

2003 pro and downloaded the service pack 3 but I'm not sure. I have restored to a pre installation condition but to no avail. I guess I'm smart enough to be dangerous and dumb enough to kill.
