Where is the Windows Update data location?

I see that other people have had the same (potential) problem I am having with not being able to download updates. People have graciously suggested solutions - none of which have worked for me or others. (I haven't made any intentional changes to my system

since the last successful update.) Microsoft Fixit says that the "Default Windows Update data locations have changed" and it has not run the fix. So, simply - Where is the default Windows Update data location? Can a marginally competent person fix this himself?
