Projector not recognized by Windows when connected to DVI port

I have a projector with an HDMI input. I ran a cable from my Windows Vista pc video card from the DVI output to the HDMI input of my projector. Windows will not recognize it and the projector wont recognize that there is an output signal on the DVI port.

I plugged my regular LCD monitor in the same port and it works fine. The problem is that for my regular LCD monitor i want to use the RGB connection and use the DVI for my projector. Can someone help ?
