Windows 8 Remote Desktop connections take a long time to establish

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8 it takes a long time to establish a direct RDP connection to Windows Server 2003 or Server 2008. From Windows 7 it used to take about a second. With the Windows 8 RDP client it takes about a minute to connect to a server. 

Thanks in advance for any insights into this issue.
