Uninstalled Java and now sound has stopped working.

After news reports today I decided maybe I should unstall Java. I have Win 7 64 bit with IE. Online videos don't have sound nor does Rhapsody and Netflix. Is there an alternative to Java? The sound is not working for many applications.
