How to convert "failed" updates into "successful" once listed in update history?

Operating Vista Business. Have been getting updates since April 20 2011 but only today actually managed to get them "successful" and only the 12 that arrived this morning. Givemn that I may have beaten this b* PC how do I now persuade it to find and instal

all the updates that it shows as "failed" in my history. Is it something that can be done by a novice?
