windows 8 updates installed, now my computer is hung up restarting

my new hp windows 8 computer just installed all 26 updates.  in the lower right corner as the installation was ongoing there appeared a message saying my computer would restart in 2 days.  very odd.  then, once all the updates were installed, it shut down

and started an automatic restart.  two hours later it is still trying to restart.  i tried powering it off, won't let me do that.  i tried ctrl, alt, delete to bring up the task manager and shut it down that way, no luck.  now what?  any suggestions??
