Guest mikelenno Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Hello, I'd like to get the qotd service running on our LAN as part of a way to inform users. I've enabled Simple TCP on our Windows 2003 Server SP2 but when I telnet to port 17 on the server to test I get a flashing cursor only - not a quote. The quote file is in the correct location. The server and workstation I'm testing from both have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i - I've disabled the Access Protection components of these (the bit that does port blocking I believe) when testing but still no joy. The MS how to article seemed straightforwared so I'm not sure what else I can check. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated as the feature would be really useful to us at the moment. Thanks, Michael

Guest mikelenno Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Re: Unable to Telnet to port 17 (QOTD) Thanks Meinolf but I can't see anything further via those links. There is a reference to a conflict with a printer port when running print services for Unix but that's not the case in this situation. As I said before - it looks easy/straightforward to enable but it's just not working at this end. mikelenno "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > Hello mikelenno, > > Just because i found this articles: > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283491 > > If you expand the left side from this article you can see a lot more of possibilities: > http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/w2000Msgs/693.mspx?mfr=true > > Best regards > > Meinolf Weber > Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers > no rights. > > > Hello Meinolf, > > > > I don't see anything related in Event Viewer (looking at System and > > Application). > > > > mikelenno > > > > "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > > > >> Hello mikelenno, > >> > >> Can you post the complete entry from event viewer. > >> > >> Best regards > >> > >> Meinolf Weber > >> Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and > >> confers > >> no rights. > >>> Hello, > >>> > >>> I'd like to get the qotd service running on our LAN as part of a way > >>> to inform users. Guest mikelenno Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 RE: Unable to Telnet to port 17 (QOTD) No joy so far in getting qotd to work - would it help to move this to a different forum?
