How do I update XP after a full reload? The microsoft site doesn't seem to like me!

I have just done a full xp reinstall after some freezing issues (trojan?) On trying to update xp, I am getting messages and error codes which prevent me getting on with the job. Error 404 and "the web cannot display the website. I was under the impression

there was support till the end of the year.
