Windows 8 Reader problems with some pdfs

When trying to open some pdf files in Windows Reader I get an error 'can't open  this file.  There's a problem with the file format' - these files open fine with Adobe reader - which I don't really want to have if I don't need to.

Is this a compatibility issue that hasn't been properly addressed in Windows 8?
