Windows 8 Hangs when "creating a new folder" anywhere OTHER than the Desktop

Good Morning,

Being brand new to Windows 8 (just bought the Asus x202e and love it so far)... windows 8 is intriguing.  A big problem I have with it, when I enter the documents folder and try to create a "new folder" it hands, the open window "is not

responding" and then crashes.  The only way I can create new folders is to make them on the desktop, then drag them to their destination where I wanted them originally.  

This computer is for school (Graduate)... this is annoying.  Any possible fix suggestions?

 

again, quick recap...

 

creating new folders (other than on the desktop) makes windows 8 'window' hang and 'is not responding' and then crash...
