All of a sudden my MSE auto updates stopped, my scheduled scan stopped & now it won't let me manuall

I have Win 7 & have had MSE since this PC was new, more than a yr.  I noticed the last couple of weeks that the scheduled scan has not been running, now it's not updating & it won't allow me to update manually.  If MSE is not protecting my computer, I

want to dump it & get something that will.  Any suggestions?
