How do I get Movie Maker with Windows XP to accpet MP4 files?

I am fearful of downloading extra software from the web to enable my MP4 files to work with Movie Maker.   If it were a Microsoft fix, directly from Microsoft, I would download it, but just to download something from a place I am not familiar with is not

acceptable.  How can I make the hundreds I spent on Microsoft software useful for my needs in a manner that will not jeopardize my computer?  Thank you very much.
