My laptop has a 40GB hyard drive running XP SP3 and is continually updated.  I use well known tools to keep unwanted files and programs off the sytemn.  Over the past 5 years my hard drive has steadily filled up and now paging rates have escalated and

I must do something about this.  I am suspicious about .NET and Silverlight which may have caused system bloat.  I would like to remove both but wonder (a) whether this will cause noticeable problems to me, a simple user, (b) the frequency of usage by websites

and applications with which I interact, and © whether this is an advisable way forward?  I am a Pensioner and seek to avoid replacement of my HDD, laptop or otherwise spend on unwarranted upgrades.  Or, should I simply reinstall a fresh copy of XP?
