windows 8 lock screen unresponsive after update

I purchased a new VAIO Windows 8 laptop a week ago. The past two times that Windows 8 had an automatic update, the updates installed completely, and then I was stuck in the lock screen, which was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. Last time I refreshed

my computer to get out of it. This time I am resetting it. This cannot go on. I can't reinstall all of my files and programs each time Windows has an update. What can I do to avoid this happening again?
