excel and adobe do not recognise my printer

I have Vista and office 2007 - I have just installed a new HP officejet 7500A wide format wireless printer.  While I can print fine from word, I cannot print from either excel or adobe pdf files.  I also cannot select my new printer as the default printer. 

I am not a technical person but would really appreciate some help from someone who can talk me through how to fix this.  I have read other people have similar but not the same problem.
