Win7 updates not installed on new build cpu

I am tring to update Windows 7 Home Premium. I built a computer with an AMD A10 chip, GA F2A85X-UP4 motherboard w/16Gb Ram, and a 128Gb SSD. Per the mobo manual, I installed the OS first, then the driver disk.  When attempting to do updates to Win7, it hangs,

whether trying to do it manual or automatic. On occassion, I can install some updates manually, but not often. I've tried the fix it utility, but it doesn't seem to do much, except to say the Windows Update database is fixed. What can I do to get the updates

installed?
