After upgrading to Windows 8, can previous windows installations be deleted in disk cleanup?

After I upgraded to windows 8 from windows 7 I ran disk cleanup.  Disk cleanup show 23 GB for previous windows installations.  Can these previous windows installation be deleted in disk cleanup or show they stay?
