Are you just wired to a normal modem or is it a wireless connection Mike?

Ok so I'm assuming your coming off a laptop, are you using a BT home hub Mike?

If so have you tried hard wiring to the hub?

It sounds like you may have some malware issues also.

No I have a desktop....... I have a laptop from work and its fine- never have any connection problems

I have noticed that if i use the "diagnose connection problem" in the tools menu after a while its ok again?

Again I have to say have you tried hooking to the wireless router/modem hardwired via normal ethernet cable?

Is it a BT Hub?

Ozborne you must reply to what I wish to ascertain please.

You may need to hard wire your computer to the modem that you have as the wireless connection may be dropping out.

You have to use ethernet cable with an RJ45 plug on each end to do so.

Have a read of this and if you are still confused then get back to us.

A drop in connection as Wolfey has said is common on Wireless set ups that are not configured properly - are you using a USB stick or an add in card for wireless on the desktop?

did you install the software that came with it?

did it come as a set with the router?

Hi,

I have hardwired as suggested but still get the problem/

It is orange broadband with a Thompson router linked via a USB port.It was fine for months.

The signal strengh is marked as very good.

Everytime it goes offline I use the "diagnose connection problems" in the tools menu, then go to my homepage and it works fine.........untill it goes offline agai?

Any more ideas?

Do you think it is a connection problem or a bug which keeps taking it offline?

thanks

Being BT or Orange, I assume the connection to the outside world is via an ordinary telephone line. First, do you have any filters connected between the phones and that line and also one between the router and line? Next is do you have any crackling noises in the background when using the phone? If so it could be down to a fault on the telephone line or landline.

Hi,

Bear with me, I am going to ask lots of questions:)

There are two possible ways your connection can go down, one is the link between your computer and your router, the other is the actual broadband connection down your phone line.

To help diagnose which it is, can you clarify the equipment you are using - a Thomson router, it will have a model number - the most common wireless version being a 585.

It's a liitle confusing reading the posts, trying to picture how your connection is set up. If I have this right, normally you would have a wireless connection to the router - yes?

At the moment you are using a cable to help with fault finding - yes?

You mentioned that you have a Thomson router linked via a USB port - yes?

Ok, the link via a usb port bit - is that because you have a wireless adapter in the USB port to connect with or...is that because you have a USB cable connected to the router. Do you see what I'm getting at?

I would expect a router to connect to a PC using an ethernet cable or RJ-45 (same thing) as Wolfey mentioned. Do you have one of those - it looks a bit like a phone connector on both ends, but is wider.

If you are connected using a cable, and your wireless connection is still active, it will confuse the diagnosis. Is that how yours is set up?

If you can confirm all this info and then we can jump in and work out what is wrong.

thanks for all your help............i will answer all the questions as soon as pos !!

Just looked at the Thompson router and cannot see much re model no

It only shows:

wlg 1500a

0470?

It looks like half a golfball with a green flashing light

Hope this helps.

Mike, that does help. That beast is the wireless adapter that is plugged into your PC - yes?

The router is the box plugged in to your phone line, it will have a mains adapter and a few lights on the front.

Can you confirm that, and it's model number - thanks.
