Windows 8 - Windows Update crashes system

Everytime I try to check Windows Update through the Control Panel it will crash and make me restart it from Task Manager, nothing but TM will fix it.

 

Also nothing I download that needs installing will, it does not give me an option to 'Run'. I'm beginning to believe a previous update has become corrupt, and it says 'Click to Run' is open but nothing is there.
