suddenly no microphone hardware in control panel?

I have a HP dv6000 laptop that i've had for about 5 years with no problems. I've tried to use skype today and for some reason all of a sudden it says i have no sound card installed. I have perfect audio but no recording device. When i go to control panel

and look in recording it says "no audio devices are installed". Ive run the usual windows updates and done quite a bit of web searching looking for answers but i keep drawing a blank. If any body was able to help me i would be really appreciative please. Many
