Why doesn't the dir command in a terminal window show any files?

I want to be able to go into a directory and list all the files, recursively, putting the results in a file.   But when I go to the directory and do dir, it shows only . and .. and none of the files which I know are in that directory.What is going on?Is there some other way to list all the files, recursively, in a given folder and put the results in a text file which can be examined later?
