Windows 2003 R2 Server Searching

I have noticed a problem when I use the search tool in Windows Server 2003

R2. I was going through the server searching for all *.jpg files and when I

did it pretty much took the server down to a crawl and I had users calling me

one after the other asking why the server was so slow. What is going on when

I am doing the searching? I have checked the indexing service in

administrative tools and it is turned off and I have the option to not use

indexing in the search options. Where else could the problem be?? Thanks in
