Unable to do any updates

I have had to re-install all original software and operating system (Windows XP) that came with my laptop. After installing I tried to update as recommended and keep receiving the error message " The website has encountered a problem and cannot display

the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem". I can not get beyond this point. None of the suggestions are of any help as they do not pertain to this message. Do you have any suggestions?
