does security essentials protect incoming and sent e-mails?

I previously had Norton security suite, it protected incoming and sent e-mails., had a registry clean up. i had a problem with it and with Microsoft support. it was removed and replaced by security essentials. are they provide the same the same protection?

If it doesn't, what other free software do I need.
