How do I setup an online fax?

I have a Canon MP495 copier scanner. My PC is a Dell Optiplex 780 with windows fax software. I am on ATT Uverse wireless system for my internet.What else do I need to be able to fax online? Do I still need a phone hookup? Do I need a modem. And finally

how do I put it all together?  Should I just go out and buy some software and not bother with all the hassle?
