Unable to update Windows Defender in Windows 8

I'm unable to update Windows Defender in my Windows 8 Laptop. It shows a 0x80072ee2 error. 

Also my default apps like News and Bing search can't connect to the internet even though net is perfectly accessible in IE 9 and Google Chrome. Please help.
