Apps another word for downloads? Where did my download go??

Ok, just got the new OS, and honestly not really digging it much.  Not user friendly in my opinion and too confusing.  I downloaded a program from my college school site and cannot find where it went so I can execute it.  I am so used to Windows

7 and the easy to find downloads folder and just clicking on the program from there.  In addition is apps the new word for downloads?  It is totally throwing me off.  I am on a PC not a mobile phone or tablet, so when I think of the word app

I think of something designed for those devices.
