Failure configuring Windows Updates (windows 8)

This problem is with a new Lenovo laptop with Windows 8. It has never successfully installed updates. It is set for automatic updates and these are downloaded (26 update files), then the computer re-starts and attempts to configure the updates. every time

it gets to 15% I get the error message 'Failure configuring windows updates'. I have run the updates trouble shooter as an administrator and although it does a couple of fixes the configuration problem is not fixed. I have run a health check on the laptop

and everything passes OK. I cannot find any advice about this, so I hope someone can help.
