plugged in, not charging 2 computers same issue

I had a 4 year old HP with windows 7 stop charging the battery. I bought a new laptop (2 weeks old) with windows 8 and same thing started after a software update today. Any suggestions, known bugs or viruses? 

both have new batteries and power adapters.
