How to recover files, desktop, bookmarks etc...lost as a result of update windows 7 Professional 2 h

About 2 hours ago Windows prompted me to allow an update and asked me to close all open programs and files which I did.

When restarting my notebook an hour ago:

- all desktop files were gone

- the documents folder is empty

- the pictures folder is empty

- certain programs disappeared such as Google Chrome, Skype, etc...

- when opening Windows office it acts like the programs have never been used, similar to a clean start

- with a new download of Google Chrome and signing in.....no more bookmarks, these are all gone?

 

And I am unable to perform a recovery to an earlier point
