Deactivated(?) desktop - how to re-activate

My windows xp desktop (background) has turned white along with some message about the action being a safeguard.  I have tried "clicking" on an indicated box to "reactivate" the desktop.  The resulting popup box offers a choice of "Yes" or "No" regarding

a script error.  Clicking on either one appears to have no effect as the desktop is still white (inactive?).
