windows vista Microsoft calls to tell me I have a virus

I was asked to give them access to my computer because Microsoft had detected a serious virus coming from my computer that was infecting other computers.  The call sounded suspect, like a sweatbox call centre with people who had East Indian accents.  I asked

for their telephone number to prove they were from Microsoft and I was given 16143889092 when I called them back it didn't sound like a professional service.

 

I recall coming across this group of people when I installed some Macafee software and was having problems.  How is it no one can shut these guys down from misrepresenting themselves?
