I have a Gateway Windows XP with 2 RAM slots.  Originally, there were two 256 MGs of RAM. To increase my RAM, Gateway sent me Kingston 1 GB DDR2 of additional RAM.  In order to upgrade to my XP 32 bit to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, I need an additional

1 GB of RAM.  My questions are as follows:

(1) Can I just install another 1 GB of RAM in the slot currently containing one of the original 256 MGs of RAM?  (2)  Do I have to get a DDR module of the 1 GB of RAM?  The Kingston instructions say that DDR2 and DDR modules are not interchangeable.  (3)

What is DDR?

Thanks.
