How to I keep my destop icons from being propogated to other users on my computer?

When I install programs and they create an icon on my desktop it gets created on all other users of the machine too.  How can I delete the icons from the other users and keep it on my desktop? And, when I installl a program how can I only place the program's

icon oon my desktop?
