after recovering from windows update loop, how can I apply new updates ?

When applying windows update it went into a loop(message: configuring updates 3 of 3, do not turn off your computer)

It would then reboot and get the same message  over and over. I was able to restore from a point 2 days ago. I have disabled the auto windows update.

I currently have 11 critical updates that I am afraid to install as it will problem cause the looping again. There was no way I can determine which update(s) caused the problem  WHAT SHOULD I DO  ?
