windows 7 Computer won't play through headphones

I got a new hard drive for my laptop a few months ago after my old one experienced "physical failure".  Ever since then, a few things have been off. The one I want to fix most is the headphone issues. When I plug headphones into the jack, the little bubble

pops up saying "You just plugged a device into the audio jack". However, sound still comes out of the speakers, and when I open up the playback devices window, it doesn't list the headphones even when I tell it to display disabled devices. The headphones work

fine, I tested them on my roommates computer.
