Windows Vista Update Configuration Problem

I use Windows Vista Home edition. For the past two days it has tried to configure 7 critical updates (and a few non-critical), says it installs them, and when I shut down for completion and restart it tells me the upadates were not configured correctly and

it is reverting changes...What can I do to fix the problem or should I just take my laptop to a service depot.
