slow startup

I have windows xp and when I turn it on it takes a while to start. Sometimes about 10 minutes before the icons appear. It also is slow shutting down. Once it is running there are no problems. Sometimes it does start right away. It could be a software problem.

Is there a way to see what is slowing the startup and shutdown mode? Is there a way to fix it? Thanks.
