restore/scan disc issues

Hi,  I tried to install a new mouse and keyboard set on my comp...It detected an issue with disc c.  and suggested a scan disc  would solve the problem.. I tried to run a scan disc on startup.  another error message saying i needed to do a system restore

before a scan disc could be done.  So, I tryed to restore to a safe point but another error message says I need to run a scan disc before i can restore the system!!  Catch 22.....what do I do now??
