Laptop mouse not working since I installed the latest Windows 7 update

Installed the latest Windows 7 update on my laptop. Got a message saying one bit didn't install properly. At the same time the left hand mouse button stopped working. Can only control the cursor by clicking with the right mouse and pressing enter - which

has limited effectiveness. Tried system restore and it all worked again - but after foolishly reloading the update - the problem returned.  Cannot now restore back to where I was. Can anyone help?  Thanks.
