Malware infection even though Microsoft Security Essentials is installed and up to date

My PC got infected with a malware (ms32trayX.exe) in January. Microsoft Security Essentials did not report the infection, however I identified and removed it using Malwarebytes (free anti-malware software). What can I do to further protect my PC from infections

of this type?

Please note that I have the latest Microsoft Security Essentials definitions installed.
