problems installing sp3

I have been running Windows XP pro SP3 for several years but it had become slow.  I therefore re-formatted my disk and did a re-install of Windows XP pro SP2 from my legitimate backup CD.  I can download the sp3 upgrade but it will not install.  I get

the error code 0x80244019.  I have run a malaware and virus scan; both are clean.  What next?
