I Can't get Microsoft Update to install on Vista SP2 32bit

I know this is an old chestnut here, so apologies if I've missed the proper fix...

Windows Update is fully up to date after a Vista re-burn back to SP1

(and then half a gig of Win Updates).

Unwisely I had re-installed and activated his Office pack too soon.

So decided NOT to register for Micrsoft Update until later

- just to limit the time downloading and installing updates

Windows Update is now fully updated, BUT...Microsoft Update won't play ball.

I've tried the following

  1. MS Fixit for I've found postings saying the WU Client needs to be re-installedbut found no downloadable package - just the Fixit as above. Others still have or have had the issue ([url="here)
  2. Looked at KB901539 (careful - it's Win XP)Checked Vista, and found equivalent components, just different names, but much the same thing (using the DLL properties)The manual steps went fine (probably duplicating part of MSFixit).Result - No fix
  3. Went to the MS Update Catalog websiteInstalled its ActiveX control, hoping that's it... NOPE
  4. Googled lots. It's still a fairly common problem
  5. It could be as simple as a registry boolean value...??

Decided this is the best forum in the hope that a kind MVP will help a mug trying to be a Good Samaritan.

(Done quite a few systems in the last 10-15 years.)

In a bit of a hurry - I want to hand it back done asap
