Why is my laptop taking hours to restart after configuring windows 8 updates?

I have a brand new Samsung laptop, only one week old, & have done very little on it except learn how to navigate around windows 8. This morning when I turned it on it went straight into updates then took 2 hours to configure updates & now 4 hours later

it is still restarting. Is this normal & how can I prevent it from occurring again?
