I am unable to initate the automatic update function in spite of following the Windows direction

When I go to the Windows Security Center the automatic updates button if showing it is off. The directive is to go to the Security Center and set it to put the auto update in on position. I,ve followed the dirctions but then when I recheck the status the

auto update is still in an off position. My fear is that my computer is vulnerable as advised by the warning that I get when I sign on the internet.
