Windows update driver updates v. manufacturer driver updates

Hello.I have downloaded and installed the driver updates available on the manufacturer website for my machine.  In Windows Update under Optional updates, it lists the same drivers, but they have different release dates than on the manufacturer website.  How can Windows

have different drivers than the manufacturer?  Is there a way to know the version number of the drivers in Windows update to see if they are the same as the manufacturer?Thanks.
