RRAS IP address problem

I have RRAS running on a 2003 standard server SP2 box. It handles VPN's. It

authenticates through IAS and DHCP on a domain controller hands out IP

addresses.

Both NICS in the RRAS server show the correct static IP addresses. I can

ping both of them from my workstation. Static addresses are 172.20.0.10 and

..11.

DHCP on the domain controller shows the RRAS server as having two different

dynamic IP addresses of 172.20.2.52 and .76. When I delete these fron DHCP

the RRAS server gets assigned new dynamic IP addresses. The same thing

happens when I delete the dynamic IP addresses in DNS.

What has happened and how do I correct it?

RE: RRAS IP address problem

Follow up. I see this in Event Viewer repeated periodically. I think it is

related to the IP mix up issue.

The description for Event ID ( 5050 ) in Source ( IAS ) cannot be found. The

local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL

files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the

/AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for

details. The following information is part of the event: dc2.brsi.local, XXX.

I wish somebody that actually knew what they were talking about would

comment on this one, it's intersting to me.

My observations:

It looks like the RRAS is on a differnt subnet? (.0 as opposed to .2)

If true they (subnets)share the same Mask? the same Default Gateway?

does the DHCP sever exclude the 0.10 and 0.11 addresses?

(Does it need to?)

Is there an alternate configuration set up on the RRAS server?

Is anything on the RRAS server set up to dynamically obtain an IP

address?

I'm probobly not going to be much help but it IS interesting....

Re: RRAS IP address problem

I just found that this poor old box has an integrated NIC plus two PCI NICs.

The PCI NICs are the ones in use. The integrated NIC has no cable connection

and used to be disabled.

I disabled the integrated NIC and things seemed to be resolved. Because

RRAS can route the enabled but not connected NIC screwed things up.

Most issues are resolved now except one.

When I VPN in from the outside world I can't ping past RRAS. What has gone

wrong and is preventing me from pinging past RRAS into the LAN?

Re: RRAS IP address problem

Update.

I can VPN into this RRAS server from the outside world.

I can't remote desktop through it into my workstation or any other computer.

It has one NIC to the WAN and one NIC to the LAN, yet in RRAS it shows three

NICS. The two I just mentioned plus its loopback address and the integrated

NIC. In RRAS the integrated NIC (that is disabled in Network Places) shows

active.

Should I go in RRAS and delete the loopback and integrated NIC's?
