Downloaded Vista Service Pack 1 and created a nightmare!

Downloaded Vista SP1 pack from prompt on icon in toolbar of Toshiba Satellite A200.  After download Laptop will not boot up, message comes up that windows will do 'start up repair' but it goes on for hours and doesn't seem to fix anything.   Have tried

safe mode and also tried the option this morning to start in normal mode but laptop stuck at '28497/90621 (RegistryMachineComponents Derived Data..)  Can anybody please give me an idea of what has happened and how I can fix the problem, if I could get into

the machine I would restore back to before download.  I thought that a download from Microsoft would be safe?.  I have a basic knowledge of a pc so would be very, very grateful if someone can please helpCheers
