When installing latest Feb 2013 updates laptop hangs on 8 of 14

While I was  away from our house 12-27 Feb visitors used our laptop. On our return the battery was completely flat and the machine off. We recharged the battery and started Windows OK. An exclamation mark indicated there were Windows updates to install

and being cautious I went to the updates page and started the install. It hung on 8 of 14 for about two hours. I then clicked on the updates troubleshooter but got nowhere and still the laptop was hanging on 8 of 14. I consulted the community page and decided

to restart the laptop and try system restore. However on starting I got "Resume Windows" and a screen with "Installing 8 of 14" as one gets when one closes down and updates are processed automatically. I can see no way to get at the start screen to try system

restore or the other approaches listed in community answers.  This is the first time we have experienced any problems with automatic updates, please help.
